Synopsis
1915. The most fascinating year in the U.S.A.
Set against the historically accurate backdrop of early 20th-century America, “NATE AND KELLY” is a captivating historical fiction that intertwines the lives of Nathaniel Bonaparte “Nate” Paré, a young businessman, and Kelly Elaine Hill, a resourceful and resilient prostitute. The novel is richly crafted in the authentic tone and voice reflective of September 11, 1915, capturing the societal norms, challenges, and moral dilemmas of the era.
Nate, a product of a progressive capitalist family, grapples with the remnants of his father's teachings about greed and compassion as he navigates the tumultuous waters of a society fractured by class struggles and racial tensions.
Nate arrives in San Francisco in 1915 to be manager of “The Zone,” the arcades-and-rides section of the Panama Pacific International Exposition. PPIE celebrated both the completion of the Panama Canal and San Francisco’s recovery from the Great Earthquake of 1906. The celebration was dampened by the specter of the Great War in Europe.
While there, Nate is framed by Jerome Bassity and his corrupt cops and politicians for an embezzlement that was a theft by those powerful criminals. Nate flees San Francisco, but his new Ford breaks down in a small town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There he meets Kelly, a gorgeous prostitute who also fled Bassity and San Francisco; Bassity had her mother and grandmother killed.
As Nate finds himself drawn to Kelly, the story explores themes of love and hate, ambition, and despair, shedding light on the complexities of human relationships amid societal constraints that always affect us, even today. Through tragedy, Nate and Kelly confront their pasts and the prejudices that define their world, seeking redemption and a brighter future together.
Through vivid storytelling, NATE AND KELLY unveils a narrative woven with historical facts, the breadth of personal conflicts, and the quest for identity, engaging the reader in a profound reflection on the human condition and the enduring struggles for love and equality.
This poignant tale not only entertains but also prompts an exploration of the moral obligations of individuals in a rapidly changing America, then and now.
